In many ways inland Montenegro represents the very best of the country. Soaring peaks, turquoise lakes, stunning vistas and a warm welcome.

The two main mountain centres of Montenegro are Kolasin and Zabljak. Both offer access to whitewater rafting, horse riding, jeep safaris, mountain biking and hiking.

Kolasin is the most developed mountain resort and is best accessed from the Budva end of the coast, from where it is a two - three hour drive. The last hour of the journey is a breath-taking drive along the Moraca canyon - perhaps not for the fainthearted! Kolasin is a superb base from which to explore the nearby Biogradska Gora National Park and Tara River. Here we recommend staying in the luxurious 5* Hotel Bianca, which has a wonderful spa.

Zabljak is fast challenging Kolasin as the centre for mountain activities and is best accessed from the Kotor end of the coast, from where it is a two - three hour drive on the new road that leaves the coast at Morinj and passes through Niksic. The town of Zabljak is in the Durmitor National Park and attractions like the Black Lake are walkable from the town centre. Whilst in Zabljak we recommend staying in the Hotel Soa.
