Montenegro is a country of Mountains which all have something unique to offer. A particularly adventurous choice would be to pay a visit to the Lovcen National Park, which is roughly one and a half hour drive from the centre of Kotor. As usual Montenegro will not disappoint with the scenery as you will pass some luscious environment. The higher you get the more apparent it becomes that this isn’t a straight forward drive. The journey will slowly become more difficult as there are a large number of hair pins to navigate along with the increasing levels of un-protected cliff faces and narrow roads. Though after the long drive, there will be no point in turning back now. Eventually you will reach the top which is celebrated with a lovely restaurant and great views looking out over the towering mountain ranges. After taking a stop for something to eat, prepare for a walk up the 461 steps to the Mausoleum of Njegus which is worth every step!
The Mausoleum is where Petar Petrovic II Njegos, a prominent member of the old Montenegrin royal family Petrovic, is now buried. There is a tunnel of stairs that lead directly to the top with small viewing windows along the way. The Mausoleum is breath taking and is only superseded by the amazing views. It is said that on a sunny day Italy is visible, though this is something that needs to be seen to be believed! Even on a cloudy day, Lovcen is a hot spot for tourists and it is easy to understand why it is one of the best combinations of nature and history open in Montenegro.
